The Kitten Who Wants To Be The Boss of Her Temper: A Story To Help Children Deal With Tantrums
Paperback
By Cecilia Egan (Author)
Illustrated by Elizabeth Alger
What if you could read your children a story that uses effective psychological methods to help them learn to deal with tantrums?

Many parents worry about young children behaving aggressively when they feel upset or throw tantrums. Much of this is normal for youngsters.

Nevertheless, these issues do need to be addressed.

Psychological anger management techniques to help children deal with tantrums include:

* ‘Breathing out’ the anger with slow, deep breaths.
* Counting to ten slowly, to give angry feelings some time to subside.
* Moving away from the problem situation until you feel calmer.
* Squeezing or pummelling a soft, inanimate object such as a cushion, which cannot be hurt and which cannot hurt you.
* Engaging in vigorous physical activities such as running, cycling, dancing or even housework, as an outlet for pent-up feelings.
* Lying down and listening to relaxing music, or sleeping.
* When you feel calmer, talking about your feelings with someone you trust.

This story also harnesses the mnemonic power of visual association and simple rhyming verse to make learning fun and the techniques easier to remember. Just as children respond to Cecilia Egan's sleep-inducing story 'The Kitten Who Learns to Fall Asleep," so they can learn to be the boss of their temper while listening to this tale.

Note to the reading public:

"The Kitten Who Wants To Fall Asleep" is distinct from the book “The Rabbit Who Wants To Fall Asleep A New Way of Getting Children to Sleep” by Carl-Johan Forssén Ehrlin, and should in no way be confused with it.

Several years ago, renowned psychologist Chris Thompson wrote in “Getting Your Toddler To Sleep Through The Night” (2013),

“You need to learn how to tell stories that have embedded messages in them. I often told my daughters a story about a little bunny rabbit that had fun playing all day, and enjoyed crawling into his comfy bed at the end of the day... If you are telling a story about a little bunny rabbit, talk about how the bunny lies in bed and feels happy about how much fun he’ll have in the morning ...”

Thompson also wrote: “Notice that the phrases I wanted to mark out as standalone embedded commands are in bold. We would normally do this while speaking by using a different tone or tempo...
“If you are snuggling with your child as you tuck him in for bed, you can easily say something like, 'I always find that I start to get tired at night time. We had lots of fun today, and we were outside a lot. Playing is fun, and at the end of the day it’s ok to feel sleepy for bedtime. Soon I’m also going to really get sleepy now and then I’ll be able to just go to sleep tonight.'”
